Technical SEO Checklist for Indian Businesses (2026)

A practical technical SEO checklist covering every foundation Indian businesses need to rank in Google Search, AI Overviews, and local results.

Technical SEO is the foundation beneath everything else. Content, backlinks, and social signals only compound value when search engines can reliably crawl, understand, and index the site. For Indian businesses competing in Google Search, this checklist covers every technical signal that matters in 2026.

1. Crawlability and indexability

robots.txt — Confirm your robots.txt file (yourdomain.com/robots.txt) allows Google and other crawlers to access the pages you want indexed. Accidentally blocking important pages is one of the most common technical SEO mistakes.

XML sitemap — Submit a sitemap at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml through Google Search Console. The sitemap should list every page you want indexed, with lastModified dates so Google knows when pages were updated.

Canonical tags — Every page should have a canonical tag pointing to its own URL (or to the preferred version if duplicate content exists). This prevents indexing signals being split across URL variations.

noindex audit — Check that no important pages have the noindex robots meta tag unintentionally. Development environments, thank-you pages, and search result pages should be noindexed — your main content pages should not.

2. Page speed and Core Web Vitals

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. For Indian users on mobile networks, performance is especially important:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — The largest image or text block on the page should load within 2.5 seconds. Common fixes: compress and convert images to WebP, use a CDN, and defer non-critical JavaScript.

Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — The page should respond to user input within 200ms. Common causes of poor INP: heavy JavaScript, long tasks blocking the main thread, unoptimised event handlers.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — Elements should not shift as the page loads. Reserve space for images and ads with explicit width/height attributes. Avoid loading fonts or embeds that push content down.

Tools: Run your pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console. Aim for green (good) scores on all three metrics.

3. Mobile usability

Over 70% of Indian internet users access the web primarily on mobile. Google uses mobile-first indexing — it crawls and ranks based on the mobile version of your site.

  • Text must be readable without zooming (minimum 16px body text)
  • Tap targets (buttons, links) must be at least 48×48px with adequate spacing
  • No horizontal scrolling on mobile viewports
  • Interstitials (pop-ups) that block content on mobile trigger a Google penalty

Check your mobile usability status in Search Console → Core Web Vitals → Mobile.

4. Structured data (schema markup)

Structured data tells search engines what your content means, not just what it says. It unlocks rich results — FAQ cards, breadcrumbs, job listings, star ratings — that take more space in SERPs and get more clicks.

For every Indian business website: - Organization (or LocalBusiness / ProfessionalService): company name, URL, logo, contact, sameAs social profiles - WebSite with SearchAction: enables the sitelinks search box in Google results - BreadcrumbList on every page below the homepage

For service businesses: - Service schema on each service page: name, description, provider, areaServed - FAQPage schema for every FAQ section: enables FAQ accordion cards in Google SERPs - HowTo schema for process sections: eligible for rich results

For businesses with a physical location: - LocalBusiness with PostalAddress, geo coordinates, and openingHoursSpecification - This is required for Google Maps integration and local pack eligibility

Validation: Test every page at search.google.com/test/rich-results after adding schema.

5. Metadata

Title tags — Every page needs a unique, descriptive title tag between 50–60 characters. Include the primary keyword near the start. For Indian businesses targeting city-specific queries, include the city name: "Web Development Company in Mumbai | Republic Labs".

Meta descriptions — Write compelling 150–160 character descriptions that include the target keyword and a call to action. While descriptions are not a direct ranking factor, they affect click-through rate, which is.

Heading hierarchy — Each page should have exactly one h1 that matches the page's primary topic. Use h2 for major sections and h3 for subsections. Do not skip levels.

Open Graph tags — Add og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url so pages look correct when shared on WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Twitter — important for Indian social sharing behaviour.

6. Internal linking

Internal links distribute authority across your site and help search engines understand the relationship between pages.

  • Every service page should link to related service pages and the contact page
  • Blog posts should link to the most relevant service page
  • The homepage should link to all main sections with descriptive anchor text
  • Avoid orphan pages (pages with no internal links pointing to them)

7. HTTPS and security

All Indian business websites should run on HTTPS. Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and Chrome marks HTTP pages as "Not Secure" — which visibly damages trust with Indian users.

Check that all pages, assets (images, scripts, fonts), and redirects use HTTPS. HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects should use 301 permanent redirects, not 302 temporary.

8. AI crawler access

In 2026, appearing in AI-generated answers (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot) is an important additional visibility channel. Ensure your robots.txt allows:

  • Googlebot-Extended (AI Overview training)
  • GPTBot (ChatGPT)
  • ClaudeBot (Anthropic)
  • PerplexityBot
  • Bingbot (Copilot)
  • Applebot

Also create a llms.txt file at your domain root — an emerging standard for LLM-friendly site summaries that helps AI models describe your business accurately.

9. Search Console setup

Google Search Console is the most important free tool for Indian businesses monitoring SEO:

  • Submit your sitemap
  • Monitor the Coverage report for crawl errors
  • Use URL Inspection to verify how Google sees important pages
  • Watch the Search Appearance report for rich result eligibility
  • Set up email alerts for coverage drops and manual actions
